Born in Alberta, Canada, Mike Sullivan was raised in Montreal and lived in Northborough, Massachusetts for the last 21 years. He was a graduate of City and Gill College in Cork, Ireland. Mike had an illustrious technical career with 25 years as Principal Engineer at Digital Semiconductor and three years at Intel Corporation.

For over 30 years, Mike has been at the forefront of inventive CPU design and graphics, real-time image capture and display systems, high performance video design and applications, StrongARM architecture and systems, and a unique wireless Internet camera system with electromechanical pan and tilt mechanisms, wireless remote sensors, and RFID capability, and most recently RFID systems performance control and monitoring.

Over the last five years, he transitioned to a successful entrepreneurial career, first as a co-founder and CTO of Idealogix in 2000. Later, in 2002 Mike became an independent technology consultant and partnered with Tri-Cycle Product Development of Hudson, MA and designed a handheld RFID analyzer as well as an innovative electro-optical pan and tilt system for use with tower-mounted broadcast TV cameras. In 2003 Mike was contracted by The Gillette Company to provide technical consulting on their RFID initiatives and in 2004 Mike co-founded SKUmatics, LLC, an RFID consulting and product company.

His technical contributions over the years have been invaluable and he was recognized for his innovative and creative work in systems design and concept generation through existing and pending patents. Mike's work with Gillette and the RFID industry was visionary and resulted in multiple patent applications for RFID systems - performance control and monitoring. He was also the Hardware Architect for the Gillette RFID team and a leader and mentor to the team. Mike was an active participant in the EPCglobal standards development process and identified and pushed for the establishment of the Applied Tag Performance Workgroup focused on next generation tag and readers conformance, performance and interoperability testing.

Those who have had the opportunity to work with him and learn from his technical brilliance have valued their friendship with a down-to-earth friend and a gentle soul. Mike Sullivan passed away on May 5, 2005, after a heart attack. He leaves his wife of 30 years Bridie and a son Barry. His son Brian died in 1994.

In memory of our beloved friend and RFID visionary, Mike Sullivan, we partnered with Boston Scholars to create the Mike Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund. Starting with the inaugural tournament in 2005, we raised approximately $20,000, and then added to that amount by raising $55,000 in 2006. All of these funds are used to support the Mike Sullivan Scholars through the Boston Scholars Program. Last year’s success is largely due to the strong individual and corporate support from leaders in the RFID industry, which we believe indicating Mike’s lasting personal and professional impact and influence. By partnering this event with RFID Journal and its 2007 RFID Journal Live! Conference, we hope to continue to build an everlasting endowment in Mike’s honor.
