Dear Boston
Scholars Supporter:
Welcome
to the first edition of the Boston Scholars Program Newsletter. We are
happy to have received your recent support because we are so excited
about our new organization. We have made some great accomplishments
to date, and are poised for even more success. From our outreach efforts
thus far, we have received over three dozen applications from deserving
Boston-area students who want to attend private high schools, but are
unable to afford to do so. We are currently selecting students to be
interviewed, finalizing our fundraising efforts for this school year,
and completing our mentor selection process. Please read our feature
stories to learn more about our recent accomplishments.
And, of
course, we hope to see
each and every one of you at our benefit event on March 13!
Sincerely,
Board of

Boston
Scholars Program: Who We Are
The Boston
Scholars Program opens the door to new
educational opportunities for disadvantaged students and
provides access to a world of opportunities not previously
thought possible.
Though
an established business and social hub of New
England, Boston has some of Massachusetts' poorest
performing students as measured by the Massachusetts
Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). These students are
typically disadvantaged and raised in inner city
neighborhoods where they have a difficult time getting the
opportunities available to more fortunate children. During
our initial year of operation, the 2004-2005 school year,
the Boston Scholars Program will provide approximately
fifteen scholarships to disadvantaged students who have been
accepted to private high schools. In addition to receiving
financial assistance, these "Boston Scholars" will be
assigned qualified mentors to help guide them through the
challenges of high school and prepare them for success in
their college years and beyond. Both the financial award
and the mentoring program will last the term of the Boston
Scholar's high school education.

Boston Scholars Program Begins Student Outreach
The Boston
Scholars Program partners with key organizations
and with select junior high or middle schools in order to
reach students who can most benefit from it. On January 13,
the directors of the Boston Scholars program met with 8th
grade students from partner schools in Dorchester and
Jamaica Plain. Working in small groups, each joined by a
Boston Scholars Program director, the students discussed
what it takes to be successful in various professions, such
as medicine, teaching, engineering, or the law. Students
came away from the discussion thinking about the many
opportunities available to them and what they need to do in
order to reach their goals.
Becoming
a Boston Scholar, of course, is one step that can
lead to success. Director Ann Mittelstadt discussed the
Program's approaching application deadline, and students
were excited by the possibility of winning one of their
first academic awards and over $1000 in tuition assistance.
Directors also received encouraging feedback about their
outreach efforts from 8th grader Josh. Asked, "Were we
cool, or kind of dorky?" by the Director of the Boston
Scholars, Rob Higby, Josh replied, "I guess I would say half
and half." Being "half cool" in the eyes of an eighth
grader
after one presentation means the Boston Scholars Program
has come a long way already!
