Boston Scholars Class of 2009 Selected
On Saturday, June 18, The Boston Scholars Program proudly announced its Class of 2009! This year's Class consists of 10 confirmed Scholars, with four more awaiting relief of "wait-list" status at their respective independent schools. This year's Scholars come 7 different middle schools and will be heading to 8 different high schools in the fall. We are proud to announce the following Scholars!

The selection process was exponentially more difficult this year. Due to the increase in partnerships Boston Scholars established since the Class of 2008 was awarded, our reach to underprivileged youths expanded significantly and resulted in over 75 applicants. Boston Scholars worked closely with the following partner organizations in order to identify motivated candidates for the program: Big Brothers of Mass Bay, Boys and Girls Club of Boston, Citizen Schools, Epiphany School, Mother Caroline Academy, Nativity Prep, Edwards, Timilty and Roxbury Prep.

The summer has been packed with activity as our Scholars begin to get to know their fellow Scholars, respective Mentors, and the specifics of the four year experience they have embarked on as a Boston Scholar. We celebrated of the acceptance of our second class of scholars with a June 18 Kick-off BBQ at the Epiphany School and a July 20 photo opportunity with Massachusetts Governor Romney. We also enjoyed an evening in the Boston Common to watch a Shakespeare Performance in July and are looking forward to an afternoon in Rhode Island to cheer on the PawSox in August. We are very excited to get to know our newly inducted Scholars!

Fundraising Update
The Development Committee is pleased to announce the program has exceeded the critical $200,000 mark in total donations and pledges received to date. Please know that you have earned the sincere thanks and admiration from the Board of Directors for your significant efforts in supporting this achievement. We also ask for your expertise and creativity in exploring new opportunities over the coming weeks, as we have established a goal of surpassing $100,000 in new donations before the end of the calendar year 2005. The highlights of our fundraising efforts to date include a $10,000 grant award from the famed Newman's Own foundation, our "Party with a Purpose" / Silent Auction Event at Sanctuary in Boston which netted the organization well over $5,000, as well as the 'First Annual' BSP running of the Big Lakes Half Marathon which also yielded over $5,000 in runner sponsorships and donations.

On behalf of the Boston Scholars Program, we thank you for your ongoing support as we work diligently to open doors for disadvantaged youths through educational opportunity. To renew your support of our organization with a donation in 2005, click here.
